Tohill’s battle. Lynch’s war

NGK Stock Hatch Championship, 22.09.09

Ryan Lawford arrived at Pembrey hoping to get the results required to take the championship battle to the final round at Mallory Park, but it was not to be. A loose flywheel in practice for round six required repair work on his car that took two heats, denying the young driver the two times required to qualify for the final. It was the brand new car of Derek Tohill that set the pace. Built in just three weeks as something to race through the winter before a new assault on the European championship in 2010, the Irishman was untouchable and took a clean sweep of wins in the heats and the A final. Gordon Lynch initially followed his countryman in the A final, only to be overtaken by namesake Tony Lynch who claimed second place and his second class championship in three years. The ever improving Toby Crocker had a great run to fourth place, ahead of a squabble of Irish visitors, Ken Curran, Ciaran Murphy and Tom Murphy.

As with the Supermodifeds, the class was boosted by the Irish championship contingent for round seven on the Sunday. However, Tohill remained in command, but not for lack of trying from Michael Duke and Tony Lynch, the latter going for broke having confirmed his championship on the Saturday and eventually passing Duke for second. Lawford had a better day and finished fourth, little consolation for watching the championship slip away from him the previous day. Irish drivers, Robert Critichley, Philip Kelly and Derek Lenehan rounded out the A final finishers.

A finals (four laps): 1 Derek Tohill (Peugeot 106 XSi) 4m14.60; 2 Tony Lynch (Peugeot 205 GTi) +6.5s; 3 Gordon Lynch (Peugeot 106 XSi); 4 Toby Crocker (Citroen Saxo VTS); 5 Ken Curran (Peugeot 205 GTi); 6 Ciaran Murphy (Peugeot 205 GTi); 7 Tom Murphy (Peugeot 205 GTi)
Round seven: 1 Tohill 4m14.900; 2 Tony Lynch +1.27s; 3 Michael Duke (Peugeot 205 GTi); 4 Ryan Lawford (Peugeot 205 GTi); 5 Robert Critchley (Peugeot 205 GTi); 6 Philip Kelly (Peugeot 205 GTi); 7 Derek Lenehan (Peugeot 106 XSi) ; 8 Gordon Lynch.
