This was Liam Doran’s day. The 22-year-old was fastest in the first qualifying heat, setting a time one-second faster than his father and champion-elect Pat Doran (Winkleigh) could manage. Then, in the third heat, Doran Jnr. (Sittingbourne) lopped a mighty 3.5s off his previous best, leaving FTD at 2m34.218s. Doran Snr. was again second fastest, but this time trailed by almost seven-seconds.
Andy Scott (Dumfries) qualified third, the Peugeot driver again showing great form in only his third Supercar event. Steve Hill (Aylesbury) and Ollie O’Donovan (Iver) shared the second row of the grid, the latter making a guest appearance here in Doran Motorsport’s Ford RS200 and setting fastest time in the second heat.
Dave Bellerby (Northallerton) made his first Supercar start in a British championship event, driving the Procters Motorsport Ford Puma and making it to the A final in sixth place despite problems with the car’s power steering. David Binks (Newcastle upon Tyne) and Chris Langley (Hastings) completed the grid, Brian Jukes (Newcastle upon Tyne) missing the cut with his Audi TT while Kevin Procter (Northallerton) went out of the event with engine damage in the first heat and Kevin McCann (Rowhook) made it no further than practice before gearbox problems halted his Subaru Impreza.
Liam Doran led the A final from start to finish and took a clear win over Pat Doran and O’Donovan, the latter making a great start and putting in a strong first lap to run third.
Hill was fourth in the first lap but went off the track after an incident with Scott on the Stebbe gravel section. Hill restarted his Mitsubishi Lancer and made it to the finish in seventh place, but the time lost meant that he did not qualify for the Superfinal.
Scott survived to place fourth, Binks running out fifth in another fine performance while Bellerby made a slow start but got the Puma to the finish in sixth place. Langley went off at the start of the fourth lap and was classified eighth.
